How long is COVID contagious?
Most people with COVID-19 are contagious for 5 to 10 days after symptoms begin. You’re usually most infectious in the first few days, even if your symptoms are mild. The Georgia Department of Public Health recommends the following timeline:
- Day 0: First day of symptoms (or the day of your positive test if you don’t have symptoms)
- Days 1–5: Stay home and isolate from others
- Day 6–10: You can end isolation if symptoms are improving and you’ve had no fever for 24 hours, but you should wear a high-quality mask around others
- After Day 10: Most people are no longer contagious and can resume normal activities without a mask.

How Long Does COVID Testing Take?

- PCR Test: PCR samples are sent to a lab for processing, and results usually come back within 24–72 hours. Turnaround times may vary slightly based on demand and lab capacity in Georgia.
