Born at Fort Lewis, Washington, Dr. Dejhara Wellons grew up in a military family, experiencing life across diverse locations including Washington, Georgia, Kentucky, Texas, and even Panama. This unique upbringing shaped her adaptability, cultural awareness, and deep sense of community—qualities that continue to influence her approach to patient care.
Dr. Wellons earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She went on to complete her Master’s in Biomedical Science and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – Georgia Campus. She then completed her Internal Medicine residency at Garden City Hospital in Michigan.
Board-certified and professionally affiliated with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American College of Physicians (ACP), Dr. Wellons brings a diverse clinical background to her practice. Prior to entering primary care, she worked as an EMT and as a nocturnist—experiences that strengthened her clinical judgment and reinforced her passion for patient-centered medicine.
Dr. Wellons describes her path to medicine as something that “picked her.” From a young age, she felt a natural calling to help and heal others, a passion that was solidified during her time working in emergency medical services in college. Although she initially considered emergency medicine, she found her true fit in internal medicine, where she could build lasting relationships with patients and support them throughout their health journeys.
She is especially passionate about patient education and preventive care. Dr. Wellons prioritizes lifestyle management and empowering patients with knowledge, aiming to reduce or even eliminate the need for medications when possible. She finds the greatest fulfillment in gaining the trust of patients—particularly those who may feel hesitant about healthcare—and helping them take control of their health.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Wellons enjoys gardening, dancing, traveling, public speaking, and caring for her many houseplants. She is a devoted wife and mother to her young child, and her lively household also includes two dogs, several fish, and a thriving garden.
