How Does My High-Deductible Plan Work?

1. What is a High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)?

A high-deductible health plan is a type of health insurance plan that has higher deductibles than traditional plans but usually offers lower monthly premiums. You pay more out of pocket before the plan begins to pay for covered healthcare expenses.

2. How do HDHPs work?

You’re responsible for paying the full cost of medical care until you meet your annual deductible. After that, your insurance starts sharing the cost through coinsurance, and once you reach your out-of-pocket maximum, the plan covers 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.

3. What expenses count toward the deductible?

Medical services like doctor visits, lab tests, imaging, hospital care, and most prescriptions count toward your deductible. However, preventive services (like vaccines and screenings)

Is pre-authorization required for services?

Pre-authorization may be required for certain services, depending on your insurance plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider for detailed information.

How can I verify my insurance coverage?

To verify your insurance coverage, please contact our office with your insurance information, and our team will assist you in understanding your benefits and coverage.

Are there specific insurance plans that you do not accept?

While we strive to accept as many insurance plans as possible, there may be some specific plans that we do not currently participate in. We recommend contacting our office to inquire about your specific insurance plan.

What’s the Difference Between an Annual and a Sick Visit?

1. What is a primary care office visit?

A primary care visit is an appointment to address a specific health concern. This could include:

  • New symptoms (e.g., cough, pain, rash)
  • Ongoing conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure)
  • Medication refills or adjustments
  • Follow-up after a recent illness or hospital visit

2. What is an annual physical (preventive visit)?

An annual physical is a preventive check-up focused on your overall health, even if you feel fine. It may include:

  • Routine physical exam
  • Preventive screenings (based on age, gender, risk)
  • Vaccination review
  • Wellness counseling (diet, exercise, lifestyle)

3. Can I discuss health concerns during my physical?

Yes—but it depends on the complexity.

  • Brief concerns may be addressed during the visit.
  • More detailed issues (new symptoms, chronic condition changes) may require a separate office visit.

4. Why might I get charged for both a physical and an office visit?

Insurance typically covers preventive visits differently than problem-based visits.

If your provider:

  • Evaluates a new issue
  • Adjusts medications
  • Manages a chronic condition

That portion may be billed as a separate office visit, which could involve a copay or deductible.

5. What should I schedule if I feel sick or have a concern?

Schedule a primary care office visit so your provider can focus on diagnosing and treating your issue.

6. What should I schedule if I feel healthy?

Schedule an annual physical to stay on top of preventive care and screenings.

7. How often should I get a physical?

Most patients should have a physical once a year, but your provider may recommend a different schedule based on your health needs.

8. What if I’m not sure which visit I need?
